Make Your Wedding More Photogenic

Whether you have a professional wedding planner giving you suggestions or are asking your family and friends for advice, these easy photo tips can help you create a more picturesque wedding day. You and your guests will appreciate the creativity of your wedding events and you'll love the look of your luscious photos!

Tip #3 Consider where the sun will be during the ceremony.

No matter where you are in the world, if the sun gazes upon you during your ceremony, it will greatly impact the look and feel of your wedding photos.

While great photographers can magically transform the worst lighting conditions into a dream shoot, we still hope for a scene set under optimal lighting. Honestly, hazy and overcast days are my favorite. But if you're dreaming of a clear day, plan to have the sun hanging low in the sky.
A sunset wedding is a beautiful idea, but light may be a bit too dim to capture it so sweetly on film (or digitally). So really be sure your wedding photographer knows how to handle these low-light conditions before counting on them to capture it romantically as you imagine.

In contrast, holding a ceremony at high noon (or the equivalent, position-wise) is a photographic nightmare. The direction of light, cast from overhead, creates dark shadows around the eyes, which is flattering to no one.
Planning for the sun to sit low in the sky is ideal, but be sure to think about who will be looking into the sun. Giving folks a bit of shade is helpful in all lighting conditions, as well as sitting guests' backs to the sun. Be sure it won't be glaring your your face either... you'll want to be able to see the love in your partner's eyes.
So just to re-cap:

Natural shade is optimal.
Sun sitting low in the sky is great.
Sun shining down from overhead is no good.
Discuss an actual sunset ceremony with your photographer.
Keep direct sun out of everyone's eyes if possible.

Tip #2 Inspire Your Photographer!

Everyone benefits from inspiration, especially your wedding photographer. No doubt you have an opinion about the types of photography you like, and of course one of the best ways to get what you want is to share your opinion with others.

Collect photos you love and share them with your wedding photographers. This is especially important when visualizing your group portraits. These days, photographers are getting very creative with wedding party shots; some use props like umbrellas, and many get dramatic with location settings.
From the photographer's point of view, it can sometimes be difficult to predict how dramatic or goofy brides and grooms want to get. Asking a group of people to run and jump with props, or to lift the bride or groom at inappropriate times can ruin the experience for everyone. Not to mention the photos will suffer. Avoid assuming the photographer will know exactly what you and your party are in the mood to try.
By giving your photographer samples of group shots you love, two great things are likely to happen:

a) Your photographer will feel more confident about giving you and your guests good direction during shoots, and

b) You'll end up with outstanding photos to rave about!

The wedding couple, along with bridesmaids, groomsmen, and family, got ready for the big event at Ed's parents' house in Bellevue, WA
Laura wore Fuchsia slippers. Her hair was elegantly braided and wrapped up like a gift with delicate ribbon.
Her gown was handmade by a dear friend.
Always ready to perform for the camera, Ed was a photographer's dream!

Tip #1 Dress Into the Looking Glass

Some of the most beautiful images have peered back at me through a mirror. A quiet moment frozen in time, elegance staring at me through my lens, begs me to press the shutter. I couldn't have planned it if I tried. The stars align and a truly unforgettable image is made.

Give your wedding photographer memorable, yet artistic moments to capture by placing a large, elegant mirror in your preparation area (day-lit, if possible). Spend time getting ready in front of the mirror by yourself and with close friends and family. Have your wedding party help you into your gown, put on earrings or makeup. Have mothers or sisters clasp your necklace. The photos, like the experience, will be intimate and treasured.
